A spiritual life in a secular world...Our word "secular" was brought into usage to describe those areas of society that were non-religious. At a time when the church dominated society, secularism was a movement that argued certain areas of life - perhaps law, morality or education - should be free of the church's influence. Now the tables have turned. The church no longer dominates western cultures as it used to and now when people use the word "secular" it is more often to express that the dominant forces of society are non-religious and may even be hostile and oppressive to the nurture of our spirituality. So what should we do? We can lament the decline of the church, criticise the erosion of traditional values, complain about the domination of pop-culture, cringe at the impact of marketing and generally spend our time longing for "the good old days". But that will achieve nothing. The alternative is to develop new beliefs and practices that will help us develop and sustain a spiritual life in a secular world. As we explore this theme over the next six weeks I pray that together we can develop a healthier, stronger and more vibrant spirituality that grows out of a healthy relationship with God, others and ourselves. We encourage you to devote these six weeks to the nurture of your spiritual lives. It's important and deserves your attention.
